Here you can learn how your company can actively engage in human rights efforts
What Are Human Rights?
Human rights are fundamental rights and freedoms that all individuals are equally entitled to. They typically refer to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, established in 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly. Human rights are categorized under:
- The right to life and liberty
- Freedom from slavery, torture, child labor, and forced labor
- Freedom of opinion and expression
- The right to work and education
They are based on the principles of universal and inviolable human dignity. Human rights cannot be given away or taken from individuals. As a company, you are also obligated to respect human rights. This applies not only to your employees but also to ensuring that your suppliers respect the human rights of their employees.
One way to incorporate human rights into your business is by implementing a sustainability policy that commits to respecting human rights and appointing a senior executive responsible for sustainability.
When your company works with human rights, this can be done both internally and externally, for example, by setting requirements for suppliers. Specifically, your company can establish a Code of Conduct, committing to specific rules about how people within your business should be treated. Externally, human rights for your suppliers can be ensured through a Supplier Code of Conduct, which outlines your expectations for suppliers to comply with, including human rights standards.
There are several concrete ways your company can work to ensure human rights compliance. You can report on these efforts using Valified’s platform, where they will automatically be included as part of your company’s ImpactReport. This allows you to show stakeholders that your business is conscious of human rights, both internally and externally.
